Joel stays crouched down as he nears the Hunters - and the moment Ellie is jumping over the drums and onto one of the Hunters' backs, Joel launches himself forward and grabs an arm around the other Hunter's throat. The man lets out a shout, which is instantly cut off by Joel stabbing the shiv deep into the side of his neck and then ripping it forwards, outwards, severing the man's vocal chords and jugular vein.
There's a sudden gushing spray of blood as the man gurgles and claws at the air at nothing in particular while Joel lets him go and lets the man slump to the ground. There's blood all over Joel's hands, on his sleeves, but he pays no attention to that, just launches into a run towards the gap in the fence with the shiv still clutched in his hand.
"No sign of--" he begins answering - and lets out a startled shout as he's grabbed from seemingly out of nowhere. He staggers to the side and instinctively lashes out with the shiv; the Hunter lets out his own shout of pain as the shiv slices across his arm but it's not enough to make him let go.

The first thing he sees is man towering over him with a fist coming down hard towards his face - and Joel, with teeth gritted while struggling underneath the weight pinning him down, stabs at the first thing he can angle the shiv at, which right into the man's left eye.
